In 1950 Teresa founded the Missionaries of Charity, a Roman Catholic congregation of over 4,500 nuns and operating in 133 countries in 2012. This church operates homes for people dying of HIV / AIDS, leprosy and tuberculosis. It also operates soup kitchens, pharmacies, mobile clinics, counseling programs for children and families, as well as orphanages and schools. Members took vows of chastity, poverty and obedience, and also made a fourth oath - “serve the poorest of the poor with all their hearts”.
